Casa dos Bicos

Location
Beira, Mozambique

Year
2025

Located along the banks of the Rio Chiveve in Beira, Mozambique, Casa dos Bicos reimagines a historic riverside structure through a contemporary architectural intervention centered on cultural revival. At the heart of the project lies a concert hall, integrated within a 4000m2 total built area distributed between a basement and ground floor.

The design establishes a respectful dialogue between past and present. The original Casa dos Bicos hyperbolic roof is preserved and structurally reinforced, while new independent lightweight volumes and modern architectural elements enhance the site’s identity without overpowering its heritage.

In the transversal section, the relationship between the old and new structures becomes clear. The new volume is completely independent—structurally detached from the existing shell. This allows the heritage building to remain untouched while supporting the new program.

We also see how natural light reaches the basement spaces through subaquatic windows integrated into the reflecting pool above, enhancing both interior quality and energy performance. Finally, an exterior walkway wraps around the new volume, functioning as a public circulation route as well as a secondary evacuation path in case of emergency.

In the longitudinal section, we see the full sequence of spaces as they connect to the exterior public realm. The entrance vestibule leads into the concert hall, which has a gentle 10% slope, ensuring accessible circulation to every part of the seating area without the need for internal ramps or lifts. We can also see how the redesigned public space now extends all the way to the river edge, creating a strong urban and ecological connection.

On the ground floor, we find the most public-facing functions: the main vestibule, which serves as the primary circulation core, the concert hall, and the cafeteria, which also extends out into the surrounding public space.

On the basement level, we find more technical and private uses. These include the music education and practice spaces, the back-of-house areas supporting the concert hall, basement parking, and the backstage loading and service entrance, ensuring the separation of public and technical flows.

The exploded axonometric on the right breaks down the different components of the proposal—from the existing concrete shell, to the mass concrete base slab, to the lightweight steel frame and curved roof.
